UNAIR Chemistry Lecturer Gives Material Related to Healthy and Halal Food in a Webinar Held by DWP KJRI Karachi, Pakistan

Surabaya – Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) KJRI Karachi held a Webinar entitled Healthy and Halal Food on Monday (5/15/2023). The seminar was held in a hybrid manner in the Nusantara Room of the Consulate General in Karachi, Pakistan and zoom meeting and was attended by hundreds of cadres of DWP Consulate General from various countries in the world.

Present as speakers, 2 lecturers of the Chemistry Study Program at Airlangga University. Prof. Dr. Pratiwi Pujiastuti, M.Si and Dr. Muji Harsini, M.Si.

Dr. Muji Harsini, M.Si, a lecturer in Analytical Chemistry at Unair had the opportunity to deliver material with the theme Recognizing Food Additives that are Safe for Consumption. She explained the identification of natural and artificial food coloring ingredients, the dangers of food coloring for health, the dangers of artificial sweeteners that have a high level of sweetness, understanding terms in the use of sugar such as sugar free, less sugar, no added sugar, and unsweetened. He also provided insight into energy drinks that are very dangerous if consumed continuously, this can result in heart failure, anxiety, kidney failure and addiction. In addition, he conveyed some preservatives that are allowed and also preservatives that are not allowed in food, for example borax, formalin and nitrite and how to distinguish foods that contain these dangerous preservatives. Finally, before the material presentation session was over, he gave some tips for consumers who contain food ingredients containing BTP, one of which is to always read the composition of the ingredients contained on the packaging label and observe the feasibility of product shelf life according to the packaging and composition, as well as vigilance if there is an illogical situation.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Pratiwi Pujiastuti, M.Si, lecturer of Organic Chemistry Unair had the opportunity to deliver material with the theme of Syubhat and Non-Halal Foods, Drinks, Drugs, Cosmetics and Gunaan Goods. She explained several things about the meaning of halal and haram, the purpose of halal product guarantees, verses in the Qur’an, the history of the establishment of BPJPH, products that are derived from non-halal / pork, food products, drinks, cosmetics, medicines and finally used goods from non-halal / pork. From some of these materials, the most emphasized is that food products, drinks, cosmetics, drugs that are around us are derived from pigs such as brushes, gelatin, charcoal, capsules, cosmetics containing collagen from pigs, jackets from pig hair and others.

Although this activity was carried out online, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of the participants in participating in this activity. This can be seen from the number of participants who asked questions in the discussion session. The participants also gave thanks to the presenters because the knowledge provided was very useful.
