UNAIR Chemistry Holds Training on Making Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as an Alternative to Handling COVID-19 through Increasing Body Immunity

The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga, conducted community service again on Saturday (04/12). This time, the service took place at the Cangkir Village Hall, Driyorejo District, Gresik Regency, under the theme “Training on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Production as an Alternative for Covid-19 Management Through Immune System Enhancement.” The event was attended by members of the PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment) and PKK Cadres from Cangkir Village.

The activities began with an opening and welcome remarks from the Head of Cangkir Village, Mr. Karnomo, S.T., S.H., who expressed delight in the community service organized by UNAIR’s Chemistry Department and hoped for similar activities in the future in Cangkir Village. The second address was delivered by Dr. Miratul Khasanah, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga, who is also a Chemistry lecturer at UNAIR. In her speech, Dr. Miratul thanked the Village Head for the opportunity provided, enabling the Chemistry Department to conduct a series of community service activities in Cangkir Village. The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Chemistry, FST, Universitas Airlangga, and Cangkir Village.

The main training event began with a pre-test to assess participants’ knowledge levels regarding the upcoming material, followed by a presentation by Drs. Tokok Adiarto, M.Si., on the importance of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) for enhancing immune system function. The presentation was interactive, interspersed with a question-and-answer session with participants. The second session involved a practical demonstration of VCO production led by Drs. A. Budi Prasetyo, M.T. During the practical session, representatives of the participants were invited to come forward and directly practice the process of making VCO using fresh coconut milk and pre-prepared VCO starter provided by the committee, consisting of lecturers and students from UNAIR’s Chemistry Department. The event concluded with a post-test to gauge participants’ understanding after receiving the materials and hands-on training.
