Department of Chemistry FST UNAIR Assists Surabaya City Teachers to Create Online Learning Media and Preparation of Enzyme Scientific Work

The Covid-19 pandemic has not only impacted the health sector but has also directly brought significant effects to the education sector. Face-to-face learning models have become difficult to implement amid the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, online learning has become a widely chosen model not only in higher education but also in primary and secondary education. Proficiency in information technology has also become a necessity in implementing online teaching and learning processes.

The need for proficiency in information technology for online learning underlies the implementation of the Community Service Program (PENGMAS) by the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga. This program focuses on providing training on creating social media content to support the teaching and learning process. It aims to assist teachers in conducting online education as advised by the government to prevent and reduce the spread of Covid-19 within school environments.

The training was held in the computer laboratory of SMAN 22 Surabaya City on October 10-11, 2020. This training program received a positive response from the participants who were teachers in the Surabaya city environment. The participants were very enthusiastic in asking questions related to the use of social media as a medium for the teaching and learning process. In addition to providing training on the use of social media, the Department of Chemistry FST UNAIR also provides training on the preparation of scientific papers. In this PENGMAS program, the field of scientific work presented was Biochemistry with the topic of Enzymes. Many applications of enzymes are found in everyday life, for example the enzyme papain (protease enzyme) from papaya fruit and leaves which is widely used as a meat tenderizer. In addition to training on the preparation of scientific papers. The participants also had the opportunity to directly practice the extraction and application of enzymes derived from soybeans. Through this PENGMAS program, participants are expected to be proficient in using social media in the teaching and learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic and skilled in compiling scientific papers.
