Dissemination of Research by UNAIR’s Master’s Students in Chemistry: Presenting Studies on Hemodialysis Treatment, Cancer, and Antimicrobial Activities
The end of the 2021/2022 academic semester did not mark the end of the journey for the 4th-semester graduate students. After completing their research and thesis defenses, the students were encouraged to disseminate their research findings. This year, three Master’s degree candidates in Chemistry successfully graduated: Hamizah Haula’ from Indonesia, and two international students, Musbahu Adam and Abdullohi Musa from Nigeria. The dissemination took place online on September 3, 2022, from 09:00 to 11:30 WIB via Zoom meeting.
Hamizah Haula’ in the field of analytical chemistry presented her thesis titled “Imprinted Zeolite-Indoxyl Sulfate for Removal Uremic Toxin Indoxyl Sulfate in Hemodialysis Application”. Next, Musbahu Adam in the field of physical chemistry presented his thesis titled “An perspective on Using Organic Molecules Composing Carbon Dots for Cancer Treatment”. Lastly, Abdullohi Musa from the field of organic chemistry conducted a review article for his thesis titled “Antimicrobial Activity of The Extracs and Secondary Metabolite Compounds from Clausena Genus”.
The event was attended by 22 participants consisting of Master’s students and several chemistry professors. The dissemination was guided by MC Nikita, a Master’s student in Chemistry at UNAIR. The event began with the singing of the Indonesian national anthem and the Airlangga University anthem. Subsequently, the event was opened by a welcome speech from the Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Chemistry at UNAIR, Yanuardi Raharjo, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. Following the presentations from the three speakers, a question and answer session was opened by the MC at the end of each presentation. Several participants showed enthusiasm towards the topics presented by the speakers. Dedi, a new Master’s student who was particularly interested in the hemodialysis research presented by Hamizah, asked questions regarding early detection of Indoxyl Sulfate toxin in kidney failure patients and the duration of hemodialysis sessions required for these patients. This led to an engaging discussion among the students, especially the new ones. The final session concluded with a prayer and a group photo organized by the committee.
