Mulyadi Tanjung, an expert in Organic Chemistry, uses nature as his guiding teacher

Dr. Mulyadi Tanjung, drs, MS, is a lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at Universitas Airlangga. Born in Padangsidempuan on April 22, 1965, Mulyadi began his journey in chemistry during his university years. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Universitas Andalas, followed by his Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

As a dedicated lecturer, Mulyadi teaches several courses at the Department of Chemistry, UNAIR, including Natural Product Chemistry, Organic Chemistry I and II, Determination of Organic Molecular Structures, Physical Organic Chemistry, and various laboratory practical courses. He has authored several books related to his expertise in chemistry, such as “Determination of Organic Molecular Structures” (2004), “Physical Organic Chemistry” (2004), and “Phytochemical Methods” (2005, 2007).

Mulyadi believes in the philosophy that nature should be regarded as a teacher, aligning with his extensive laboratory research activities. He emphasizes the importance of harmonizing with nature, noting that many beneficial medicines originate from natural sources.

He sees nature as a vast reservoir of chemical compounds with immense benefits for both human and environmental health. These compounds play critical roles in agriculture, where they contribute to producing healthy crops, as well as in medicine, where they provide essential therapeutic compounds. Mulyadi advocates for optimal utilization and preservation of Indonesia’s extensive natural resources, which he refers to as “chemical factories.”

Looking ahead, Mulyadi hopes that the global chemistry community will recognize Indonesia as a focal point due to its abundant natural resources. He stresses the importance of collective efforts to preserve the environment and advance civilization while ensuring that the benefits derived from natural resources are returned through positive contributions.
