UNAIR Chemistry Collaborates with Dr. Yoshinaka Takaya in Webinar on Isolation, Elucidation, and Modification of Natural Products
The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga, held another guest lecture webinar on natural product chemistry titled “Isolation, Structure Elucidation, and Modification Strategy of Natural Organic Products” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yoshiaki Takaya. The webinar was attended by students from Universitas Airlangga and several universities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Myanmar on November 27th.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yoshiaki Takaya is a faculty member at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Meijo University, Nagoya, Japan. His current research focuses on evaluating active biological compounds from plants and microorganisms, including chemical structure elucidation, as well as designing and synthesizing bioactive compounds with their mechanisms. Additionally, he has been actively collaborating with the natural product research group led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nanik Siti Aminah from the Department of Chemistry, Universitas Airlangga, since 2003.
Graduate of S-3 from Hokkaido University explained the latest and conventional isolation techniques using various chromatography techniques. In addition, discussions on each group of secondary metabolite compounds were also explained along with their biosynthesis mechanisms. Furthermore, he also demonstrated how to analyze 1D and 2D NMR easily so that the compound can be directly identified including which group of secondary metabolite compounds it belongs to. In the final session, he discussed opportunities for modifying the design and synthesis strategies of natural organic products.
He also emphasized that through learning and practice, we can easily and efficiently isolate the desired pure compounds, as well as elucidate and design compounds, requiring modification strategies in the techniques employed.
