Department of Airlangga University held a guest lecture titled \u201cPlant-Made Protein: Production of Anti-Toxoplasma Immunoglobulin from Mucuna bracteata,\u201d open to undergraduate and master\u2019s students of Chemistry as well as students from other study programs. The event featured Dr. Nazrin Abd Aziz, a lecturer from the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), as the speaker. As a token of appreciation, a souvenir exchange took place between Airlangga University and UTM before the lecture session began.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"734\">In his presentation, Dr. Aziz introduced Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, which has three main campuses in Johor Bahru, Pagoh, and Kuala Lumpur. He also presented the Innovation Centre in Agritechnology for Advanced Bioprocessing, a research center at UTM focusing on the development of pharmaceutical proteins through molecular pharming\u2014a technique that produces therapeutic proteins using plants as bioreactors.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"1440\">Dr. Aziz explained that the plant <em data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"788\">Mucuna bracteata<\/em> is used as a medium to produce antibodies against the parasite <em data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"871\">Toxoplasma gondii<\/em>, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis commonly found in cats. Genetic engineering is performed by transferring the immunoglobulin-encoding DNA into the plant via the bacterium <em data-start=\"1048\" data-end=\"1075\">Agrobacterium tumefaciens<\/em>. He also compared the performance of <em data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1131\">Mucuna bracteata<\/em> with other plants in expressing antibodies. \u201cTo produce antibodies, the immunoglobulin gene is given a special signal so that it can be directed to the plant\u2019s endoplasmic reticulum,\u201d Dr. Aziz said when responding to student questions about the production methods and protein functionality within the plants.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c937b3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"0c937b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/mkimia.fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/05\/unnamed-3.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-5350\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mkimia.fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/05\/unnamed-3.jpg 512w, https:\/\/mkimia.fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2025\/05\/unnamed-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Discussion or Q&amp;A Session<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc849d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bc849d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>During the question and answer session, a master\u2019s student asked about the efficiency comparison between permanent and transient genetic transformation methods. Dr. Aziz explained that the permanent system allows gene integration into the plant genome, whereas the transient method is not permanent and its expression results are often unstable.
