From Chemistry to the World of Industry and Business

The career journey of Indryati Widjasena serves as clear evidence that chemistry is not limited to laboratories, but can also lead someone to strategic positions in the world of industry and business. The alumna of the Chemistry Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (now renamed the Faculty of Science and Technology, FST), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), class of 1986, has had an interest in chemistry since high school.

Her family background also influenced her choice. Her parents had educational backgrounds in chemical engineering. This interest continued to grow stronger until she eventually chose to pursue her studies in Chemistry at UNAIR.

Early Career in the Cosmetic Industry

Indryati began her career as a Quality Control staff member at PT Vitapharm. This experience became an important foundation in understanding the cosmetic industry in depth. She then continued her career at PT Nardevchem, PT Menjangan Sakti, and PT Bsk Tijala.

Entering the next phase, Indryati demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit by becoming the owner as well as commissioner of PT Marga Dwi Kencana for more than a decade.

Not stopping there, since 2024 until now, she has continued to develop various business lines by establishing several companies. Among them are PT Elang Rajawali Mandiri in the healthcare sector, PT Intihuma Elang Perkasa in the property sector, PT Intivesta Elang Perkasa, and PT Elang Inti Medcos. In all of these companies, she serves as commissioner.

The Important Role of Chemistry

According to Indryati, the chemistry knowledge she learned during college has played a major role in her career journey, especially because she has been heavily involved in the cosmetic industry, which is closely related to chemistry.

“With a chemistry background, we can understand products more deeply and explain them to customers, most of whom also have backgrounds in pharmacy and chemistry. This makes our competence more appreciated,” she said.

The UNAIR Chemistry alumna also emphasized that the learning process does not stop after graduation. In the cosmetic industry, the development of raw materials continues to progress rapidly. Therefore, she actively participates in training from international suppliers and continuously updates her knowledge regarding product innovation.

“Chemistry, especially cosmetic chemistry, is always evolving. We must continue learning, even at an older age,” she added.

Message for the Younger Generation

For students and younger generations, Indryati shared an important message to focus on understanding knowledge rather than merely pursuing academic grades. She also highlighted the importance of enriching oneself with additional skills, such as communication and language proficiency.

In addition, students are encouraged to actively seek knowledge beyond classroom materials in order to gain broader and more applicable insights.

“Study seriously and love the knowledge you learn. When entering the workforce, we will not be empty-handed, but prepared and knowledgeable in our field. Do not focus solely on money, because success will follow along with competence and dedication,” she advised.

The story of Indryati Widjasena’s journey serves as an inspiration that chemistry graduates have broad opportunities to grow, not only in science but also in business and leadership. With a spirit of lifelong learning and the courage to innovate, chemistry can become a strong foundation for success in various industrial sectors.
